Welcome to Chiropractic!

Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts, which is concerned with human health and disease processes. Doctors of Chiropractic are physicians who consider man as an integrated being and give special attention to the physiological and biochemical aspects including structural, spinal, musculoskeletal, neurological, vascular, nutritional, emotional and environmental relationships.

The practice and procedures which may be employed by Doctors of Chiropractic are based on the academic and clinical training received in and through accredited chiropractic colleges and include, but are not limited to, the use of current diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Such procedures specifically include the adjustment and manipulation of the articulations and adjacent tissues of the human body, particularly of the spinal column. Included is the treatment of intersegmental aberrations for alleviation of related functional disorders.

Chiropractic is a drug-free, non-surgical science and, as such, does not include pharmaceuticals or incisive surgery. Due regard shall be given to the fact that state laws, as well as the nation's antitrust laws, may allow Doctors of Chiropractic to utilize ancillary health care procedures commonly referred to as being in the common domain.

History of Chiropractic Care

The roots of chiropractic care can be traced all the way back to the beginning of recorded time. Writings from China and Greece written in 2700 B.C. and 1500 B.C. mention spinal manipulation and the maneuvering of the lower extremities to ease low back pain. Hippocrates, the Greek physician, who lived from 460 to 357 B.C., also published texts detailing the importance of chiropractic care. In one of his writings he declares, "Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases".

In the United States, the practice of spinal manipulation began gaining momentum in the late nineteenth century. In 1895, Daniel David Palmer founded the Chiropractic profession in Davenport, Iowa. Palmer was well read in medical journals of his time and had great knowledge of the developments that were occurring throughout the world regarding anatomy and physiology. In 1897, Daniel David Palmer went on to begin the Palmer School of Chiropractic, which has continued to be one of the most prominent chiropractic colleges in the nation.

Throughout the twentieth century, doctors of chiropractic gained legal recognition in all fifty states. A continuing recognition and respect for the chiropractic profession in the United States has led to growing support for chiropractic care all over the world. The research that has emerged from " around the world" has yielded incredibly influential results, which have changed, shaped and molded perceptions of chiropractic care. The report, Chiropractic in New Zealand published in 1979 strongly supported the efficacy of chiropractic care and elicited medical cooperation in conjunction with chiropractic care. The 1993 Manga study published in Canada investigated the cost effectiveness of chiropractic care. The results of this study concluded that chiropractic care would save hundreds of millions of dollars annually with regard to work disability payments and direct health care costs.

Doctors of chiropractic have become pioneers in the field of non-invasive care promoting science-based approaches to a variety of ailments. A continuing dedication to chiropractic research could lead to even more discoveries in preventing and combating maladies in future years.

The Doctor's Education

Doctors of Chiropractic must complete four to five years at an accredited chiropractic college. The complete curriculum includes a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical experience. Approximately 555 hours are devoted to learning about adjustive techniques and spinal analysis in colleges of chiropractic. In medical schools, training to become proficient in manipulation is generally not required of, or offered to, students. The Council on Chiropractic Education requires that students have 90 hours of undergraduate courses with science as the focus.

Those intending to become doctors of chiropractic must also pass the national board exam and all exams required by the state in which the individual wishes to practice. The individual must also meet all individual state licensing requirements in order to become a doctor of chiropractic.

An individual studying to become a doctor of chiropractic receives an education in both the basic and clinical sciences and in related health subjects. The intention of the basic chiropractic curriculum is to provide an in-depth understanding of the structure and function of the human body in health and disease. The educational program includes training in the basic medical sciences, including anatomy with human dissection, physiology, and biochemistry. Thorough training is also obtained in differential diagnosis, radiology and therapeutic techniques. This means, a doctor of chiropractic can both diagnose and treat patients, which separates them from non-physician status providers, like physical therapists. According to the Council on Chiropractic Education DCs are trained as Primary care Providers.

What is a Doctor of Chiropractic?
The proper title for a doctor of chiropractic is "doctor" as they are considered physicians under Medicare and in the overwhelming majority of states. The professional credentials abbreviation " D.C." means doctor of chiropractic. ACA also advocates in its Policies on Public Health that DC’s may be referred to as (chiropractic) physicians as well.

Chiropractic Philosophy
As a profession, the primary belief is in natural and conservative methods of health care. Doctors of chiropractic have a deep respect for the human body's ability to heal itself without the use of surgery or medication. These doctors devote careful attention to the biomechanics, structure and function of the spine, its effects on the musculoskeletal and neurological systems, and the role played by the proper function of these systems in the preservation and restoration of health. A Doctor of Chiropractic is one who is involved in the treatment and prevention of disease, as well as the promotion of public health, and a wellness approach to patient healthcare.

Scope of Practice

Doctors of Chiropractic frequently treat individuals with neuromusculoskeletal complaints, such as headaches, joint pain, neck pain, low back pain and sciatica. Chiropractors also treat patients with osteoarthritis, spinal disk conditions, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, sprains, and strains. However, the scope of conditions that Doctors of Chiropractic manage or provide care for is not limited to neuromusculoskeletal disorders. Chiropractors have the training to treat a variety of non-neuromusculoskeletal conditions such as: allergies, asthma, digestive disorders, otitis media (non-suppurative) and other disorders as new research is developed.

A variety of techniques, treatment and procedure are used to restore healing which will be the topic of future education releases.

Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture, simply stated, is a health science which is used to successfully treat both pain and dysfunction in the body.

Acupuncture has its roots deeply planted in China. In fact, authorities agree the science is between 5,000 and 7,000 years old. Its use spread throughout ancient Egypt, the  Middle East. The Roman Empire and later in Eastern Europe as merchants and missionaries to China told of the amazing discoveries the people of the Orient had developed. Acupuncture did not become known on a national level in the U.S. until 1971 when diplomatic relations between China and America were relaxed.

At first glimpse, Acupuncture appears strange; as its primary notoriety is the utilization of needless placed in the skin at various locations to relieve pain or affect a body part.

                          Anteo Chevere receives Acupuncture

Early Chinese physicians discovered there is an energy network traversing just below the surface of the skin which communicates from the exterior to the internal organs and structures at over 1,000 "Acupoints" on the body. This energy works in harmony with the body's circulatory, nervous, muscular, digestive, genitourinary and all other systems of the body. When this  vital energy becomes blocked or weakened, an effect in a body system or anatomic location becomes evident. Stimulation of one or a combination of key "Acupoints" on the body may restore harmony to the affected area.

Historians have stated, "More people have benefited from Acupuncture over the course of fifty centuries than the combined total of all other healing sciences, both ancient and modern."

What is Meridian Therapy?

Meridian therapy is the accepted name employed by those who practice the principle of Acupuncture without the use of a penetrating needle.

Acupuncture is a principle, not a technique. Therefore, there are many ways to stimulate an Acupoint other than a needle, just as there are many different strokes used in swimming.

Many practitioners use electronic stimulation, laser beam or pressure massage to treat an Acupoint. The principle of Acupuncture does not change, only the technique.

How does it work?

Far to often in the medical professions, a patient is told after extensive examination, "There is nothing wrong." "It is all in your head," or "Sorry, you'll have to learn to live with it." The examining doctor unable to find the cause of the problem has little else to tell the patient. Fortunately, many physicians are now referring their patients for an Acupuncture evaluation as a last resort.

The human body's energy flow courses over twelve meridians or  channels that are normally well balanced. If a disruption of energy flow exists, it can alter the entire system, producing pain or symptoms in the body.

If we were to compare a 175 pound man on one end of a seesaw and a 45 pound child on the other end, it becomes obvious the seesaw would be "broken" due to the fact the heavier person would be sitting on the ground and the lighter would be dangling in the air. Even though the seesaw is producing a symptom of being broken- extensive examination would not reveal anything wrong with the seesaw. The obvious answer is in the balance. Correction of the balance corrects the problem.

This is Acupuncture's goal to restore normalcy to the body's energy balance by utilizing a combination of Acupoints located on the twelve meridians. This is accomplished by a variety of means, the needle is just one.

Medical research continues in this country and others to attempt to explain in western scientific terms what the ancient Chinese seventy centuries earlier described. Today, many theories have been postulated as to why Acupuncture is so effective in pain control. However, as more discoveries are made, more research is indicated.

Is treatment painful?

One would assume inserting a needle into the skin would be painful since most of us can relate to being stuck with a pin or having a hypodermic injection. However, four Acupuncture needles can easily be inserted into the hollow tube of a hypodermic needle. Because of the extreme slenderness of the needle, most people compare the sensations "less than a mosquito bite." A phenomena referred to as "TEHCHI" occurs when the energy is contacted. This sensation  is felt as a mild to moderate heaviness or tingling.

Needles obviously still have their place in clinical practice. However, many physicians certified in Acupuncture and licensed Acupuncturists are employing electronic and laser stimulation to the Acupoint with equal effectiveness as the needle. Both of these procedures are painless and are quickly becoming standard worldwide.

The tapping needle "teishein" is not really as it does not pierce the skin. It produces a mild to moderate sensation. Compare it to tapping a ball point pen on the skin. This form of stimulation has been used successfully for centuries. Thumb pressure is equally impressive and not considered painful.

How many treatments are usual?

Obviously the number of treatments vary with different conditions and individuals. Chronic problems generally require more treatment than acute ones. Some patients notice an immediate improvement after the first treatment, whereas others may not notice any effect until the seventh or eight visit. Its been shown that a certain percentage of patients receive maximum benefit up to three months following a course of therapy.

A small number of patients will experience a worsening of symptoms, as the body's energies are returning to normal. This is usual and no need for alarm. It is followed by improvement. Researchers internationally agree the usual number of treatments is between eight and sixteen. The usual frequency is between two and four times a week.

Patients are urged not to enter an Acupuncture program with the thought of "taking a few" to see what will happen. Even though it is possible to achieve success; a program often visits would have a better chance for success. Patients are encouraged to be patients with the healing process. If the treatments are recommended and results occur in just five visits, the doctor may elect to discontinue treatments or continue treatments or continue their use to stabilize the condition.

What conditions are accepted?

Acupuncture textbooks list well over one hundred different conditions that respond well to Acupuncture. The World Health Organization, working in close harmony with the International Acupuncture training center of the Shanghai College of traditional Chinese Medicine, has indicated Acupuncture is effective in the following conditions:

bulletAcute and Chronic pain relief
bulletMigraine, tension cluster, sinus headaches
bulletTrigeminal neuralgia, bladder dysfunction, bed wetting
bulletCervical (neck) pain, mid-back pain, low shoulders, tennis elbow
bulletPost-operative pain relief, gastric problems
bulletAsthma, allergies, skin conditions,
bulletHemorrhoids, abnormal blood pressure, fatigue
bulletAnxiety, neurologic syndrome, various eye problems, etc., etc.

This is only a partial list of the numerous conditions Acupuncture has been credited with helping.

Acupuncture Anesthesia

Acupuncture has been used quite successfully in place of chemical anesthesia for a variety of surgeries within the last twenty years. At the Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology hospital it is used routinely on all cases of Cesarean section. At the Long Hua Hospital in Shanghai its used routinely on cases of thyroidectomy. It has been shown effective in gastric surgeries and brain operations.

During the procedure the patient remains alert communication with the surgeon. The patient does not feel pain, only any pulling, tugging, etc. that may be employed in surgery.

It is unlikely that Acupuncture will replace chemical anesthesia in the U.S. However, it is a favorable possibility for those patient unable to tolerate regular anesthesia. The application in dentistry are extremely significant.

The first U.S. national media coverage concerning Acupuncture was in 1971 during President Nixon's visit to China. There, visiting columnist James Reston told of his emergency appendectomy performed under Acupuncture anesthesia.

Addiction Control

Acupuncture has gained a great deal of notoriety in recent years concerning its considerable success with addiction control. It has been shown that Acupuncture has a very positive effect in the area of both drug and alcohol addiction. This procedure, in conjunction with professional counseling, has been proven extremely effective.

One of the most noteworthy addictions Acupuncture helps is smoking. The average patient will reduce their intake by at least one half within twenty four hours of the first treatment. Several additional treatments generally allow the patient to stop without experiencing the negative side effects of quitting. Acupuncture also has a favorable effect in weight control. Currently there are several clinics in the U.S. devoted solely to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

What is Auriculotherapy (ear acupuncture)?

On the ear there are more than one hundred Acupoints which relate to various organ systems and parts of the body. During fetal development the first structure to form is the brain and spinal cord; At about the same time, what later becomes the external ear also develops. Accordingly , there is a very strong relationship between the external ear and the central nervous system.

The Ancient Chinese viewed the ear as resembling an upside down fetus with all the body parts proportionately arranged in and on the ear. Therefore, the lobe of the ear would relate to the head, brain, stem, face, etc., whereas the top of the ear relates to the knee, foot, ankle, etc.

The success rate in Ear Acupuncture is remarkable. Thousands of American physicians have begun using Ear Acupuncture as an adjunct to their practice.

Hand and Cerebral Acupuncture?

Throughout the body there are a number of Acupoints which have a particular effect. this is of particular significance of the hand and scalp. Cerebral Acupuncture consists of a number of zones which are primarily used for serious neurologic conditions, whereas hand Acupoints are used for a variety of common conditions. By stimulating specific hand points, headache, sore throat, neck and shoulder pain, even toothache may be successfully treated.

Chiropractic Health

AFTER AN AUTO ACCIDENT

As hard as an auto accident is on your car, it is harder on your body. Even a minor accident can cause serious damage to your body. Whether or not you think you are injured, it is essential to have a thorough exam by your chiropractor soon after an auto accident. He or she can evaluate you and suggest a plan to help your body heal.

What Is Whiplash?

When one car hits another, each person's body is thrown toward the impact, then away from it. This is whiplash. Even at slow speeds, the wrenching force puts stress and strain on the spine, especially the neck. The weight of the head stretches and damages muscles and ligaments, and may pull spinal bones out of line. These injuries to the neck and back can be very serious.

Normal, First Phase, Second Phase, Third Phase

 --->

Symptoms of Whiplash

A wide array of symptoms can follow an auto accident. Symptoms may appear right away, or may not show up for weeks or even months. An injury may be present even if you don't have symptoms. This is called "hidden" whiplash. If symptoms are present, they may include:

bulletPain, especially in your neck, shoulder, arm, or lower back
bulletArm or leg numbness
bulletStiffness
bulletHeadache
bulletDizziness
bulletVision problems

Orthotics

Arches and Orthotic Support

Our feet are the foundation of support for the pelvis and spine. They support the whole weight of the body, they provide balance, they propel us, they safely absorb heel-strike shock and adapt to walking stresses. The feet provide the necessary stability to perform daily activities.

Central to the success of the pedal foundation is the arched structure a complex of three bony arches.

Each arch consists of several bones bound together by tough, elastic ligaments and tendons. The structure is flexible and movable, and it's able to tolerate both stress and sudden hip forces. Together the three arches form a strong and supportive plantar vault that distributes the weight of the entire body.

Arch Collapse

If any of the three arches are compromised the entire plantar vault loses it's structural integrity and certain symptoms develop.

Lack of development or loss of this configuration results in abnormal force concentrations, which cause degenerative and symptomatic clinical condition.

Solution:

Custom-made, flexible orthotics align and support the structures of the feet in a normal position, to prevent dysfunction, and to improve the function of movable body parts.

What can orthotics do?

bulletStatic Support:

During standing posture, the alignment of the arches in each foot has a significant impact on the position of the legs and pelvis.

bulletDynamic Support:

During gait, the foot undergoes substantial changes. The arches and connective tissues must sustain the stress of heel strike, then adapt to the ground during stance phase, and finally become a rigid lever to provide and efficient push-off.

bulletPostural benefits:

Orthotics are designed to provide support for all three arches of the feet can have many additional benefits. The entire body structure is balanced  on one foot at a time when walking and running, improving foot alignment. Knee, hip, pelvis, and even spinal posture alignment improves.

*Patient will benefit from the additional support provided by a pair of orthotics.

*Orthotics are well designed, custom-made, flexible orthotics can provide much of the support that is lacking and can improve locomotor efficiency by guiding the caleaneus and arches through the gait cycle.

*Children ages 5 and up can wear them.

Orthotics for women

Women are different from men in structure and biomechanics. Women's feet are jus like the rest of women's feet are just like the rest of their musculoskeletal system. In spite of this, we often tend to treat female patients who have foot imbalance and lower extremity dysfunction in the same way that we treat our male patients.

Women's feet are different in shape and size, they are encouraged to wear very different shoes, and their knee alignments and gait styles are very dissimilar. Joint problems and symptom patterns differ, so orthotic solutions need to be specific. As aging occurs, foot problems tend to become more severe, often resulting in disability and problems with walking.

bulletBunions (hallux Valgus), hammer toes, callus formation, interdigital neuromas, and metatarsalgia are all more common in women.
bulletImproper shoe size and or style (especially high heels) often contribute to these pedal abnormalities.
bulletProperly fitting shoes and flexible, custom make orthotics are recommended for support and comfort.

Patellar Tracking (Women's Knees)

The Q-angle measures the alignment of the quadriceps muscle's pull from the pelvis to the patella and the patellar tendons pull from the tibia. We know that women tend to have higher Q-angles than men. The normal range ends at 15° in males and 20° in females. Whenever a patient has excessive pronation of the foot, Q-angle stresses are magnified. The combination of a higher Q-angle with excessive pronation causes women to progress from knee dysfunction to patellofemoral arthralgia to degenerative joint disease in the knee.

Solution:

The most effective way to decrease a high Q-angle and to lower the rotational stress on the knee joint is to prevent excessive pronation with custom fitted foot orthotics. Soft corrective orthotics was more effective in reducing parellogemoral pain in women than a physical therapy exercise program.

Orthotics For Men

The male human body takes a lot of abuse. On an average day, you put a great amount of pressure on your musculoskeletal system. Your body has shock absorbers in the feet, legs and spine, but if your feet are unbalanced, the rest of your body has to adjust to compensate. Over time that excessive stress on unaligned musculoskeletal system can weaken and even injure ligaments and joints. Signs of problems a rising from unbalanced feet are:

bulletKnee
bulletHip pain
bulletBackaches
bulletNeck Tension

If chances are you wear more than one type of shoe each day orthotics can help give you an all-day performance. Orthotics are an important part of your total chiropractic care. They work in concert with your doctor's treatments by keeping your  body in balance, which makes your ajustments more effective and longer-lasting.

*For your performance, comfort, and health.
